Finding the right B2B SEO strategy
Lesezeit: ca. < 1 Minute
B2B companies operate in an environment with very specific requirements. Search engine optimization (SEO) in B2B works differently than in B2C. Especially in highly specialized technical industrial sectors, searches are conducted using very specific keywords, as the topics are complex. Standards, product numbers, and product names known only to experts deeply immersed in the respective subject matter achieve high search volumes. Behind these search queries are highly relevant users who often correspond exactly to the B2B company’s target customers.
If there is no B2B SEO strategy during dynamic market development—or to put it another way: if these specific search terms are not strategically placed on the website, the company will not rank at the top of search results on Google and other search engines. Traffic will then bypass the company because the foundation for important contact inquiries has not been established.
Even though knowledge about search engine optimization is increasing in German industrial companies, implementation often fails. What are the reasons?
Reason 1: Lack of Specialized SEO Knowledge
Marketing managers know their company’s products and customers inside out. Within the company, they handle all marketing activities from flyers to trade show appearances. They are an indispensable interface between all departments and are absolutely expert in these areas. However, successful B2B search engine optimization requires very specialized SEO knowledge and a considerable amount of time. Both are often lacking in the marketing departments of German B2B companies with a technical focus.
Reason 2: Traditional Mindset
Especially in medium-sized companies, traditional sales approaches remain very prevalent. The prevailing opinion is that they know their customers and do not need online marketing. However, contrary to this traditional mindset, search queries represent genuine demand—which goes to competitors if they receive no offer.
Reason 3: Lack of Relevant Content
Many B2B companies invest in their website but often think only of their brand presence. A well-thought-out SEO strategy with the definition of relevant search terms and the targeted development of relevant content with added value for the user is not implemented. However, it is not sufficient to simply offer print products such as magazines or brochures as PDFs for download on the website. This does not achieve rankings on Google.
Successful B2B Search Engine Optimization
Deep engagement with relevant B2B keywords is the cornerstone of successful B2B search engine optimization. Otherwise, the general approach to implementation does not differ from that in B2C.
The following steps are always required for effective SEO:
- Content audit and competitive analysis (at the beginning)
- Technical SEO (at the beginning)
- Goal definition (at the beginning, to be adjusted as needed)
- Keyword and content strategy (review continuously)
- SEO action plan (update regularly)
- SEO monitoring, action derivation (monthly if possible)
