Dual study program: the perfect entry into the professional world

Lesezeit: ca. < 1 Minute

A dual study programme is often seen as the ideal combination of theory and practice. But what exactly is behind this educational model? Below, our dual student Belinda Kaufhold describes her experiences from the first year of the dual study programme “Journalism and Corporate Communications” at Media University Cologne and the practical phases at C&G.

For me, the dual study programme is above all one thing: a varied life in two worlds—between the lecture hall and everyday agency work. I am completing a practice-integrated dual study programme—an ideal mix of university life and real agency work. It gives me the opportunity to apply academic knowledge directly in the working world—and, conversely, to benefit from practical experience in my studies.

What types of dual study programmes are there?

In Germany, four dual study models are common:

  1. Apprenticeship-integrated programme:
    – Combination of a bachelor’s degree and a recognised vocational qualification
    – Qualification: academic degree and vocational qualification
  1. Practice-integrated programme:
    – Theory phases at the university alternate with practical phases in the company
    – Qualification: university degree
  1. Work-integrated programme:
    – aimed at professionals who want to study alongside their job (usually part-time)
    – Qualification: university degree
  1. Part-time programme alongside employment:
    – Studying alongside a job—often in the evenings or at weekends
    – Qualification: university degree

The advantages of a dual study programme

A dual study programme is demanding, but it also offers clear advantages:

  1. Close integration of theory and practice
One of the greatest advantages of a dual study programme is the close integration of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Instead of focusing only on theory at university, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned directly in practice. This deepens knowledge and promotes an understanding of complex relationships.
  1. Early professional experience
Thanks to insights into the working world, students are not only familiar with the theoretical foundations, but already have practical skills and knowledge before completing their degree—a decisive advantage in the job market.
  1. Strong career prospects and opportunities
Many companies hire their dual students into permanent employment after graduation, as they already know and value their way of working and their skills. The same applies when applying to other companies: those who bring practical experience are more likely to impress than someone with a purely theoretical background.
  1. Financial independence
Unlike a traditional degree programme, where students often rely on part-time jobs or support from their parents, dual students generally receive remuneration from their partner company. This allows them to focus fully on their studies—without financial worries.

My path into the dual study programme at C&G

My journey began on June 13, 2024, at the so-called Matching Day at Media University—an event where prospective students had the opportunity to get to know partner companies in short “speed dating” rounds. This is where I met C&G for the first time. After the successful “match”, my three-and-a-half-year dual study programme started on October 1, 2024—as C&G’s first dual student.

After we had been contacted by Media University in Cologne several times in the past, we decided in summer 2024 to hire Belinda starting in October 2024. We have not regretted this decision at any point—quite the opposite: her strong results have encouraged us to hire another dual student in the field of design next year.

How the programme works – from theory to practice:

Media University follows the split-week study model. I spend Monday and Tuesday at university, and work at C&G from Wednesday to Friday. This gives me the opportunity to apply what I have learned directly in practice.

  1. Theory phase:

At university, I focus, among other things, on the fundamentals of journalism and corporate communications, various media systems, and media ethics. What may initially sound dry and theoretical forms the foundation on which I build my work at the agency.

  2. Practical phase:

On Wednesday morning, the scene changes: instead of the seminar rooms at MU, the agency offices at C&G await me. From the very beginning, I have been integrated into the agency’s processes: I attend meetings, contribute to projects, and was able to accompany a multi-day business trip. At present, my focus is on C&G’s self-marketing. I find the mix of my tasks particularly exciting—sometimes I write blog posts, case studies or LinkedIn posts; sometimes it’s about SEO and the associated optimisation of websites; or I work in the WordPress backend. No two days are the same.

Two places of learning, two worlds—but interconnected

My lecturers come from practice themselves: from editorial teams, agencies and communications departments. Many talk about their own projects and bring practical examples. And I know: the course content is far more than material for exam preparation—it serves as a toolbox that I draw on every day when I refine texts or research topics at C&G. When I hear something about storytelling in a lecture, I automatically think of my LinkedIn copy. And when we discuss successful PR campaigns, I consider whether these ideas can be transferred to our clients. The regular back-and-forth between lecture hall and agency, between analysing a case study and the real editorial plan—that is exactly what makes this form of study so exciting for me.

Requirements for dual students

In addition to a strong educational background—usually the Abitur or a university entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences—what is needed above all is motivation, a sense of responsibility and a high level of resilience. I can confirm this from my own experience. The mix of lectures, exams, projects and day-to-day work requires strong self-organisationtime management is the key to success here.

Traditional semester breaks? Not a chance. Instead, during this time I work full-time at the agency at C&G, alongside exams and term papers. It sounds stressful, but with the right motivation and a clear schedule, both can be managed. I quickly learned to set priorities and manage my energy—skills that also help me grow personally.

My dual study programme in 3 words:

Creative – when writing and bringing my own ideas to life

Exciting – thanks to meetings and real client projects

Varied – because no two days are the same and the lecture hall and agency life are closely intertwined

Why a dual study programme at C&G?

  1. Practice-oriented learning: At C&G, I was involved in real projects from the very beginning and valued as a full member of the team.
  2. Variety: From customer magazines to social media campaigns. The range is broad—just like the diversity of our clients in the technical industry.
  3. Individual development: At C&G, I am both challenged and supported. New challenges await me every day. I am able to try my hand in different areas and can approach anyone at any time with questions. Mentors from different departments provide me with guidance within the company and support me in achieving my professional and personal goals.
  4. Company culture: Creativity, openness, respect and teamwork shape everyday work at C&G. I have felt part of the team from the very beginning.

Conclusion: A dual study programme as a career booster?

A dual study programme is not a walk in the park. It requires a great deal of organisation and perseverance, but offers numerous advantages that a traditional degree programme cannot: the close integration of theory and practice provides valuable professional experience and opens up strong career prospects.

For me, Media University is the strategy room. It provides sound knowledge, methodological expertise and multifaceted approaches to thinking. The C&G agency is the test field where I apply what I have learned and receive support. At times, it is demanding to live in both “worlds” at the same time, but it is precisely this tension that makes the dual study programme valuable. Without the lecture hall, my agency projects would lack depth—and without practice, some theories would remain abstract.
